Throw Pillows

A throw pillow is a small pillow that is used for decorative purposes. Throw pillows normally come in square shapes, but have now evolved to be round, rectangular, oblong or even triangular. The common size for throw pillows is 16 to 18 square inches, but no more than 24 inches (60 centimeters) across.

The advantage of throw pillows is that it comes in a wide variety of pillow cases and covers, which can easily be removed and changed to suit any piece of furniture or room design. They now come in an assortment of materials such as silk, leather, microfiber (also known as faux suede), cotton, linen, hemp and more. Recent developments in throw pillow designs include the use of beads, embroidery, quilts and other decorative advancements. They also come in a wide variety of colors and hues that make them easy to use for home decoration and interior design.

Gone are the days when throw pillows used to be hard and very uncomfortable to use. Recent throw pillow advancements have allowed them to provide good back, neck and head support, which makes them functional yet decorative at the same time.

Throw pillows can be used to add color or accent other colors in a room like the walls, rugs and other embellishments. They serve as a good focal point to disperse attention from large chairs and furniture that would initially seem large and overwhelming. It can also add life to old and seemingly boring furniture with their colorful designs. They have also become popularly used as floor pillows to provide more seating options for guests.

Bolster Pillows

Originating from the German word bulgstraz, a bolster pillow is a long narrow pillow or cushion that is commonly filled with cotton, wool or fiber.

If we take a look back in history, we will find that bolster pillows have a very functional yet thoughtful origin. In the Far East, wives used to create bolster pillows out of bamboo for their husbands to use during their travels. Travelling can become very lonely and the bolster pillows were created for their husbands to sleep with in order to overcome loneliness.

In Asia, bolster pillows are constant bed companions for children and adults who often use these pillows as a source of comfort in the absence of covers or blankets, because the warmth of these tropical climates do not allow the constant use of blankets or covers.Recently, bolster pillows have become increasingly popular for their aesthetic value. They are normally placed at the head or foot of beds, you can now even find them in sofas, couches and even outdoors. Often known as body pillows for western countries, bolster pillows add a certain elegance in any room or furniture it is placed in.

Accent Pillow

Just as its name implies, Accent pillows are used to accentuate or complement a room or furniture. Also known as decorative or throw pillows, Accent pillows are usually square in shape, but they have now evolved into a variety of other shapes as well such as round, oval, oblong and can come in different hues and materials that makes it one of the favorite accents or decorations by interior and home designers.

In the past, accent pillows were only used to accent chairs and sofas, but lately they are also being used for bedrooms and other rooms in the home. Accent pillows have also evolved in terms of their purpose, because they can now be used as additional seats by becoming floor pillows and now come in soft material and fabric that allow them to provide extra comfort and support as well.

Accent pillows are a very cost effective way to change the theme of a room, because they can spice up or complement other décor in a room such as the walls, drapes and rugs despite their seemingly insignificant purpose. A lot of stores these days now provide different pillow cases that come in lots of attractive color tones, materials and accessories such as beads, embroidery and other items.

Couch Pillow

Couch pillows are decorative pillows that are often used on couches. They are often referred to as throw or accent pillows. Just like other decorative pillows, couch pillows are normally square in shape, but come in different sizes that can be mixed and matched on a couch to make it look more attractive or inviting.

Just like the decorative, accent and throw pillows, couch pillows are used by interior and home designers as a cost-effective means to improve the visual image of a room. By adding several couch pillows of different sizes and complementary tones or hues, you can bring energy to a room and life to old and boring furniture without having to worry about upholstery expenses or repainting the entire room.

Even if they were originally made for couches or sofas, couch pillows can also be used for beds to make it look more comfortable and appealing to the onlooker. Since there are a lot of pillow covers or cases these days, you can purchase pillow cases made of different fabric, material and prints to add debt or visual interest to a room or piece of furniture. It can also enhance the color scheme of your room by complementing the colors of other embellishments in the

Reading Pillows

Pillows come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, but most importantly they have evolved to accommodate different purposes or functions. One good example of this is the reading pillow. As its name implies was originally created for people to use while they are reading in bed or on a large sofa. These pillows are often used by students, bookworms and have become increasingly popular for people who enjoy watching television in bed.

Reading pillows are really comfortable to use, but the main advantage of these pillows is the great head, neck and back support that they provide. Regular pillows do not provide the right support for people who like to sit upright or recline in bed, which will in the long run lead to back and neck pains. Unknown to some, improper posture can also reduce breathing, because lung capacity decreases when the body is not properly aligned. Reading pillows, on the other hand, allow its users to recline or sit in a proper position, thereby helping improve a person’s posture and breathing while preventing back pains.

Reading pillows are an ideal choice for students, because it allows them to sit in an upright position while they are studying, thus preventing them from dozing off. It is also a good choice for people with arthritis or back pain.

Recent reading pillow embellishments or advancements include the use of armrests, book holders and stabilizers.

Pregnancy Pillows

Pregnancy is one of the most memorable, yet challenging phases in a woman’s life. It is for this very reason that pregnant women are given the care and nurturing that she deserves during those critical 9 months in her life.

Although nothing can compare to the difficulties a woman experiences during childbirth, one of the most difficult things for a pregnant woman during the latter part of her pregnancy (3rd trimester) is finding a good sleeping position. This is often the case for those who are used to sleeping on their stomachs. Nonetheless, when a woman’s tummy has grown to its full potential, sleeping on the side or even the back can prove to be a challenge because of weight of a pregnant woman’s belly can throw the body off balance and into improper alignment that causes back and muscle strain.

Often found in maternity stores, pregnancy pillows often look like a long bolster pillow that is shaped in a loop or like a pretzel. When sleeping sideways, one end of the pillow supports the woman’s belly while the other end can be tucked between the knees to elevate the hips, thereby lessening the stress inflicted on the area. If you have more than one pregnancy pillows, some pregnant women like to make a nest out of it, allowing it to support the back and relieve pressure on the hips and belly.

The pregnancy pillow is one truly versatile pillow. It normally comes with Velcro or snaps which would allow the user to configure or manipulate the pillow into whatever shape or form would provide her with best comfort.

Aside from sleeping, it can also be used anywhere around the house, even in the car or office to provide comfort and bodily support to a pregnant woman’s changing body.

Nursing Pillows

At first glance, a nursing pillow often looks like an oversized neck pillow because of its U-shaped design. Otherwise known as the breastfeeding pillow, these pillows are used by breastfeeding or nursing mothers and can even be used by dads, nannies or people who need to nurse or feed a child but are having difficulty finding a good position to do so.

Often used while in a sitting or semi-reclined position, the nursing pillow promotes the proper upright posture while the mother is nursing, thereby relieving stress from her back while she is doing so. It also allows less strain to be placed on her hips or lower extremities, thereby allowing lesser strain on the wounds she received during childbirth, thus promoting better healing and comfort. The arms of the nursing pillow also allow the baby to be within the proper height or position to the mother’s breasts during nursing. Since the arms of the nursing pillow normally support or share the baby’s weight, it also helps prevent muscle strain on the arms of the person who is nursing and also supports the baby’s back as he/she is being nursed.

But don’t be fooled by appearances, because a nursing pillow’s use does not end there. The baby can be allowed to sit within the pillow (supposing, of course, that he/she is within the right age to sit upright), because it can support his/her back while she is sitting. It can also be used for burping a baby by allowing the baby to lie on a crawling position with its tummy rested against the u-shaped portion of the pillow.

Decorative Pillow

Just as its name implies, a decorative pillow is used to decorate or improve the appearance of a room or furniture. Decorative pillows come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, fabrics and designs, which make it a favorite for interior designers. There are so many pillow cases and covers in the market these days, which makes it easier to manipulate and design.

Despite its name, decorative pillows can be very functional as well. Some decorative pillows, called floor pillows, can be used as extra seats or improve the seating capacity of a room, while still maintaining a classy and stylish appeal. These pillows are usually square-shaped, but can come in different shapes as well, and can reach to up to two feet wide (60 cm). They are easy to store as well and won’t take too much space as it would if you bought a new couch or sofa just to accommodate extra guests, because they can quickly be stored in a corner or cabinet with no problems.

Decorative pillows are budget friendly and what’s best about them is how they can influence or complement a room, despite their seemingly miniscule purpose and size. They can bring life to a room or otherwise boring piece of furniture or bring out the colors of your drapes and other embellishments with very little effort and expenses on your part. Another plus is that decorative pillows nowadays are made with the softest materials, which help provide good neck and back support whenever you use them as rests or for sleeping purposes. Since there are a lot of pillow covers and cases in the market, you can switch and swap your pillow cases any time you want, allowing you to change the overall image of your room with very little effort and expenses.

Euro Pillow

A type of decorative pillow, Euro pillows often come in an even square shape and are normally 26” in size. They are often used to improve visual interest on beds, sofas and chairs and their prices range from $10 to $50 USD, depending on the material used. Most Euro pillows are made from foam, down fiberfill and hypoallergenic down alternatives.

Just as its name suggests, Euro pillows originated in Europe, because in America, the traditional bed pillow is often rectangular in shape (around 26 by 20 inches). This type of decorative pillow has increased in popularity over the years when pillows began to find their place in interior or room design.

Just like with throw and other decorative pillows, Euro pillows, have a removable cover and there are lot of pillow case or cover resources in the market these days. Pillow covers come in different colors, designs and accessories that would definitely help spice up any bed or room that these Euro pillows are placed in. They keep your bed from looking just like a typical bed and add a comfy feel to any bedroom.

Buckwheat Pillow

The Buckwheat pillow has been tried and tested for over hundreds of years and are well known for the comfort and support they provide. These pillows originated from Asia and were only introduced to the west in the early 1980’s.

Most people think that Buckwheat is a type of grain, when it is actually a fruit, but it doesn’t end there. Buckwheat pillows do not contain the actual fruit, but buckwheat hulls or the husks that protect the kernels of fruit. These buckwheat hulls are roasted to remove dust and other germs before they are placed in the actual pillow.

Buckwheat is increasingly popular for yoga students and the environmentally conscious, because they are inexpensive and are made from earth friendly or natural materials, unlike the petroleum-based foam used in normal pillows.

The advantage of Buckwheat pillows is that they mold or adjust to the contours of the weight and shape of a person’s body while they are sleeping thus providing better comfort and support. They also provide the ideal temperature for a good night’s sleep, because the buckwheat hulls allow natural air circulation. Buckwheat pillows are very durable and can last for up to 7 to 10 years. They do not need to be washed regularly and just needs to be placed in direct sunlight as a means of maintenance.
